Friday cat food: Common whitetail dragonfly

Friday, June 8th, 2007

Our cats are indoor cats. They don’t seem to actually want to go outside, but they do love to watch things through the window. They’re particularly fond of birds and insects.

Recently, the cats got a nice look at a common whitetail dragonfly, who had stopped by the front porch to sit in the sun for a bit.

According to Wikipedia, our dragonfly is a male and also quite territorial.

I’m not sure whether our front porch is in his territory, or if he was just stopping by on the way to the lake!

Friday cat: Department of Home Security

Friday, May 11th, 2007

The neighbors have gotten a new puppy. As a result, their cat Patches has been spending a lot more time in our yard. To protect against this threat, our cats have created the Department of Home Security. Its members are on tireless watch to prevent foreign felines from entering the territory of the United Cats of Shrimp and Grits:

[Tom and Ash protect the homeland]
DHS Agent Tom and DHS Agent Ash protect the homeland!

Since the Department of Home Security was founded, not a single foreign cat has wreaked havoc inside the house. Now if only something could be done about the havoc that the Department wreaks on its own…

Friday cat: Sunny side up!

Friday, April 27th, 2007

We seem to have gotten through our last cold snap down here in South Carolina, and the sun is just getting warmer and warmer. While we humans are pulling out fans and turning on air conditioners to cool off, our cats have an entirely different idea:

Friday cat food: Rowdy gulls

Friday, April 20th, 2007

These gulls are a rowdy lot. They need a head bird to whip them into shape!

That gull in the middle is keeping the rest in line: Now flock and give me twenty!

Cat Cate

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

There won’t be very many posts this week, since I currently have very limited internet access. But here’s something I thought I would share with y’all.

Cate has noticed the cats. She has seen the cats for a while now. Up until recently, though, she’s seen the cats as similar to things you’d see on a television screen. The cats were things to watch, but not things to touch and interact with.

Not any more!

Cate now reaches for and touches the cats. They are lucky that she hasn’t yet discovered that cats have tails!

Friday Cat: Cat TARDIS

Friday, March 30th, 2007

It doesn’t look much like a police box, but Rusty has her own TARDIS.

Clearly, this blue basket is much larger on the inside than it appears on the outside!

Friday cat: The clean cat

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Much is often made of the aversion cats have to water. We are told that cats hate water, and will go nowhere near it unless they have to drink.

[Tom]

However, this is not true of Tom. Tom is our “bathing” cat – as you can see in the small picture above.

Still not convinced? See Tom bathe for yourself! [3.9MB AVI]

Friday cat: Stealth cat

Friday, March 16th, 2007

We don’t have as many good pictures of our cat Tom as we do of our other two cats. Why not? Tom is built with advanced stealth materials that render him invisible to the auto-focus mode of most cameras. So, we have a lot of pictures of Tom that could easily pass as UFOs – if this were that kind of web site!

But Tom’s advanced stealth technology might have finally met its match. Our new camera (a Canon Rebel XT) is a lot better at catching Tom … in focus!

Tom … in focus

Just don’t let Tom know that he’s not quite as stealthy as he once was!

Friday Cate: Sleeping like a baby

Friday, March 16th, 2007

I took this picture a day or two ago. Cate’s napping in the carseat after her ride home from the day care.

[Sleeping Cate]

She’s “sleeping like a baby”. But I wonder … where, exactly, does the phrase “sleeping like a baby” come from? The phrase as most people use it refers to sleeping peacefully.

But babies? If our baby is typical (Google search suggests that she is), then “sleeping like a baby” is taking short naps. Between the naps?

[Awakened Cate]

Between naps, Cate wants to see everything. Lately, she’s also wanted to grab everything and put it into her mouth. The world must taste great!

Oh, and if you’d like a phrase that really does mean “sleeping peacefully”, might I suggest: “Sleeping like a cat”?

Friday cat: It always feels like …
